Who is behind Almanaccolo
Almanaccolo is a daily almanac of history: for every day of the year it tells what happened, who was born, who died and what is celebrated. This page explains who makes it and how.
Who makes it
Almanaccolo is made by Aurora Digital, a software studio based in Modena, Italy, founded by Elia Tolin. It started as an iPhone and Android app in 2024; this site extends its archive to the web, in Italian and English.
It is not an editorial project with a newsroom: it is an archive built on explicit criteria, described below so that anyone can check them.
Where the historical entries come from
Events, births, deaths and observances come from Wikipedia, through the feeds the Wikimedia Foundation publishes for every day of the year. Every entry keeps a link to the Wikipedia page it derives from, so the source and its revision history are always one click away.
We do not rewrite or reinterpret the historical content. The ordering of the featured people uses the length of the Wikipedia article as an indicator: someone with a longer article is, as a rule, someone who has been studied more.
Where sunrise and sunset come from
Sunrise, sunset, twilight and solar noon times do not come from an external service: they are computed with the NOAA solar algorithm from the city coordinates, and shown in its local time zone.
The result was checked against reference sources and matches within the minute, even at high latitudes such as Tromsø at 69 degrees north. City coordinates and time zones come from the Open-Meteo geocoding service.
Reporting a mistake
If a date is wrong, an entry is inaccurate or a person is attributed to the wrong day, write to us: we correct it, or — when the error is in the source — point to how it can be reported on Wikipedia.
Solar times are computed and cannot be edited by hand: if a value looks wrong, telling us the city and the date lets us verify the calculation.
