What the air is like today

Almanaccolo shows the European air quality index for your location, along with individual pollutants and the pollen in season.

How to read it

PM2.5 matters most

Particles under 2.5 micrometres are a hundred times thinner than a hair and get past the airway defences all the way to the alveoli. It is the pollutant with the best documented health effect, and usually the one that sets the index in valley cities.

Why winter is worse

It is not that more is emitted: cold air stays pinned to the ground under a warmer layer — a thermal inversion — and pollutants do not disperse. Three windless days are enough to push the index down two categories.
