For anyone sailing, fishing or just swimming: Almanaccolo shows wave height, period, direction and water temperature.
One metre of wave with a four-second period is a short, uncomfortable sea; the same metre at ten seconds is a long swell you sail comfortably. The period — seconds between crests — tells you more about the day than the height does.
Water has enormous thermal inertia: the Mediterranean peaks around mid-August, weeks after the air temperature peak, and stays mild well into October.

| 2 | 0.1–0.5 m | Smooth. Ideal for swimming. |
| 3 | 0.5–1.25 m | Slight. Small boats move a good deal. |
| 4 | 1.25–2.5 m | Moderate. Not for the inexperienced. |
| 5 | 2.5–4 m | Rough. Difficult sailing. |
| 6+ | over 4 m | Very rough to stormy. |
